Wrestling Club in Montclair

Takedowns and mat control, ages 5 to 15

Wrestling Club is its own discipline rather than a variation on Jiu Jitsu. It is about getting the fight to the ground on your terms and staying on top once it is there — the half of grappling that decides who gets to play their game.

What wrestling adds

Jiu Jitsu is strongest once a fight is already on the ground. Wrestling is how it gets there. Students who wrestle tend to develop a level of pressure, balance, and scrambling ability that is difficult to build any other way.

What a session covers

Stance and motion, level changes, the fundamental takedowns, and the scrambles that follow when a takedown is defended. Sessions are physically demanding and build conditioning as a matter of course.

Who it suits

Ages 5 to 15, whether or not they train Jiu Jitsu. Wrestling rewards effort more directly than almost any other sport, which makes it a good fit for children who respond to seeing hard work pay off quickly.

Common questions

What ages is Wrestling Club for?

Ages 5 to 15.

How is wrestling different from Jiu Jitsu?

Wrestling focuses on takedowns and on controlling someone from the top. Jiu Jitsu covers what happens after that, including submissions and fighting from underneath. Each covers a gap in the other.

Does my child need to train Jiu Jitsu as well?

No. Wrestling Club stands on its own, though many students find the two reinforce each other.
