Adult Brazilian Jiu Jitsu in Montclair
Gi and no-gi, before work or after it
Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is a fun, exciting, and often completely new activity for adults. Students learn self defense, improve their fitness, and build a community in a family friendly environment — whether the goal is to compete, to lose weight, or to work steadily toward a black belt.
Gi and no-gi
Gi classes train in the traditional uniform, where grips on the fabric drive much of the control. No-gi strips that away: a faster, more dynamic style of grappling that leans on body control instead of grips and rewards agility and speed. Both run every week.
Before work, or after it
Classes run early in the morning and again in the evening, so training can sit on either side of a working day rather than competing with it. The current times are listed on this page and update whenever the schedule changes.
Where it can lead
As students progress the material opens up into more intricate techniques and submissions, and people start developing their own stylistic approach to their game. For those who want it, that path leads into competing in both gi and no-gi.
Who it's for
- Adults starting from zero, with no martial arts background
- Anyone who wants self defense they have actually practiced
- People who find a gym routine harder to stick to than a skill
- Students who want to compete, in gi or no-gi

Common questions
Do I need any experience?
No. Adults arrive with no background at all, and the fundamentals are part of the regular class rather than something you have to get through first.
When do adult classes run?
Early in the morning and again in the evening. The current days and times are listed on this page and update whenever the schedule changes.
Should I train gi or no-gi?
Either. The gi rewards patience and grip-based control; no-gi is faster and more scrambly. Both are on the weekly schedule, so you can start with whichever appeals and add the other later.
