Kickboxing in Montclair

Striking, footwork, and conditioning

Kickboxing is the most frequently scheduled class we run, and for a lot of students it is the way in. Sessions pair striking technique with genuine conditioning: you learn to punch, kick, move, and defend, and you get fitter doing it.

What a session covers

A warm-up that gets you moving properly, then technique — stance, footwork, and the strikes themselves — worked at a pace you can actually learn at. Sessions build toward putting combinations together with a partner or on the bag.

Fitness with a point to it

Kickboxing is demanding, but the conditioning is a side effect of practicing a skill rather than the whole exercise. Most people find that easier to keep up than a gym routine, because there is always something to get better at.

How it fits alongside Jiu Jitsu

The two cover different ranges. Kickboxing is what happens at a distance, on your feet. Jiu Jitsu is what happens when that distance closes and the fight ends up on the ground. Training both gives you a far more complete picture than either alone.

Who it's for

  • Complete beginners who have never thrown a punch
  • Anyone who wants conditioning that does not feel like a treadmill
  • Jiu Jitsu students who want to add striking
  • People who want practical self-defense on their feet

Common questions

Do I need any experience?

No. Classes take complete beginners, and the fundamentals — stance, footwork, and the basic strikes — are covered continually rather than only in an intro block.

How often does kickboxing run?

It is the most frequently scheduled class on our timetable. The current times are listed on this page and update whenever the schedule changes.

How is kickboxing different from Jiu Jitsu?

Kickboxing is striking at range while standing. Jiu Jitsu is grappling — controlling someone once the distance has closed, often on the ground. They complement each other rather than compete.
